Taiwan NGO brings hope to 27 orphan-victims of Guinsaugon tragedy

Scary times for mining
Acting on the concerns of the country’s Catholic bishops, the government has agreed to a 30-day review of the law, which opened up local mineral deposits to full ownership by foreign mining firms. Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Romulo Neri said the review was intended to give the law “more teeth” to address environmental concerns. Actual amendments to the law, Neri said, may take longer because they would need congressional action. (via Manila Standard Today)

130 sea turtle hatchlings, freed in Caraga
Some 130 sea turtle hatchlings were freed recently along the coastal area of the municipality of Carmen, Agusan del Norte particularly in Barangay Vinapor. According to Regional Technical Director Mario Eludo of the Protected Wildlife Division and Coastal Zone Management Services of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Caraga, said sea turtles were of hawksbill specie. Other types of turtles include: green turtle, olive ridley, loggerhead, and leatherback. (via PIA)
