DIY solar panels
I just finished watching CNN Global Challenges. They did a story about the youth in Kenya who make solar panels for a living. I think it’s something that can be done in the Philippines as well. Especially in places in the provinces where there is no electricity.
Sadly the story is not available on the CNN website. I did find a link here via the oneVillage Foundation blog. See DIY Solar Systems Empowers Grassroots Technologists in Emerging Markets and scroll down to Kibera Community Youth Programme.
Fortunately, the story was also covered by the BBC. See Kenya slum turns sun into energy.
I attended the Corporate Social Responsibility Expo last July 2005 and found that a German-based nonprofit organization called DED set up a solar powered computer lab in Cabilao, Bohol. Story can be found here.
Learn more about DIY solar power here. According to the web site:
As experience is gained, much more becomes possible with the solar charging of mobile phones and car batteries, water pumping, cotton sprayers, etc.It can be used by individuals, NGOs and those starting a small business and is often ideal for income-creation.
